A Brief History of Bloxburg

Bloxburg is a town in Lee County, Illinois, just south of the Iowa state line. The population was 2,835 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County.

The town was founded in 1836 and named for General James Blount, who served in the American Revolution and in the US Senate. The first settlers were pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee. General Blount had been one of their commanders.

The first school was built in 1839 and a Methodist Episcopal Church was organized that same year. A post office was established in 1840 and the town plat was filed with the county clerk on December 14th of that year. The original plat consisted of six blocks bounded by Main Street, Second Street, Third Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street, and Sixth Street. In 1841 there were forty-three people living in Bloxburg; thirty-one were white males and twelve were black females.

In 1849 a new courthouse was completed and it became the center of community life. A business district began to form around Court House Square with stores such as Jno Culp’s Leather Shop (established in 1872), Leland & Smith Drugstore (established in 1890), Burchill’s Grocery Store (established 1886), Watkins’ Restaurant (established 1889), Schaffer’s Furniture Store (established 1898), Smith’s Clothing Store (established 1903), Warner Hardware Company (established 1904) and Peoples Grocery & Meat Market

The Neighborhood Codes

The Neighborhood Codes are a system of zoning regulations used in Bloxburg, Illinois. The codes were originally created in 1916, and have since been amended several times. They are currently codified in the City Code of Bloxburg.

The neighborhood codes divide Bloxburg into nine zones, each with its own set of rules and regulations. Each zone is divided into two or more districts, which are further divided into smaller areas known as blocks.

Each block typically contains a mix of residential and commercial properties, and must comply with certain standards related to size, lot configuration, building type, and orientation. Additionally, blocks must be situated within certain distance ranges from one another (usually 5 or 6 blocks), and must share certain common features (such as a park or recreation area).

Zones and districts can be changed or added to at any time by the City Council, based on recommendations from the code enforcement department. This process is usually done in response to specific concerns or issues that have arisen within a particular district or zone.
